CONEY ISLAND PORTRAITS
2006-ONGOING

Coney Island is one of my current ongoing projects.
I fell in love with this place in 1990, at the age of 16, when I traveled to America with my parents.
Now, 20 years later, the area has undergone huge changes, many irreversible.
Gentrification is an unstoppable force destroying history here and all over the world.
Parts of Coney island such as Astroland will exist no longer in its current form, it was sold in parts and comes back in partly new styles.

Some business owners, such as Paul's Daughter and Ruby's at the Boardwalk,
were given only two weeks notice that they were to leave the places they had rented since they settled down in Coney Island many years ago.
They went to court, so they celebrate their last season at the boradwalk now.

These changes may also provide an opportunity for some to build new businesses.
Most of the existing establishments have lost their future in Coney Island. The second rollercoster was destroyed some years ago.
There is now an empty space between the beach promenade and Playland, a green area and a no man's land.

Now there is no place for Paul's Daughter, Ruby's and attractions like the Shoot the Freak Show in the future, more commercial, Coney Island.

Coney Island has been in transition since autumn 2010.
